Alexis Gordon
International Business Manager and Chief of Protocol, City of Charlotte
Alexis Gordon maintains the City of Charlotte’s trade and diplomatic connections. Her role includes connecting with foreign firms coming to Charlotte and local companies looking to explore global markets. On the protocol side, she helps visiting diplomatic delegations learn about our community and advises elected officials and staff on international affairs.
In 2008, Gordon joined the City of Charlotte as contractor for Mayor’s International Cabinet and helped transition the non-profit organization into its current government role as the Charlotte International Cabinet in 2013. She’s presented to national & international forums through Welcoming America, the Building Welcoming Communities Campaign created under the Obama Administration, and the Consular Corps College, among others.
Before working with the Cabinet, Gordon completed her Masters in International Relations and Diplomacy at Leiden University and The Netherlands Institute for International Relations, Clingendael. While studying in the Netherlands, Alexis became interested in subnational diplomacy, and specifically how cities functioned in today’s globalized political and economic reality. Her thesis, “The Cosmopolitan Metropolis: Why Cities Vie for a Role in the International System” explores international activities taken by municipalities across the globe, with a specific focus on The Hague, the Netherlands and of Charlotte, NC.
Gordon began as a radio reporter assigned to the government beat at WRHI in Rock Hill, SC. She moved to WCNC- TV to become a News Assistant and produced local cut-ins to run live during the Today Show. In 2003 she became one of the 10 o’clock news producers at WCCB.
Gordon uses her networking and communication skills to help organizations in Charlotte with media and community outreach. She is currently serving on USGLC’s North Carolina Advisory Committee and the Charlotte Sister Cities Board. She holds recognition for the following awards: 2019 Leader in International Commerce Award winner from the Carolinas World Trade Association; Charlotte International Rotary Club’s 2017 Global Service Award - Under 40 Recognition; 2017 Charlotte Business Journal's 40 Under 40; and was a 2015 Finalist for the Young Professional Public Servant - Charlotte Chamber Young Professionals Award.
Gordon, born in Honolulu, grew up a Marine Corp brat posted mainly in Europe and the Far East. While obtaining her BA with honors in Mass Communication-Broadcast Journalism and Political Science from Winthrop University she travelled to Antarctica to write, film and produce her own documentary on mankind’s influence on the frozen continent.
